I loved this special when it was on HBO. I loved all the Sinbad HBO specials. Unfortunately, they edited “Son of a Preacher Man and Afros and Bellbottoms.” It is missing so much of the laughter. The first time I saw the specials on HBO I was laughing and crying at the same time. Can they please re-release this uncut. I rather see the original.
This DVD is 44 minutes of the medium funny bits, but 16 minutes of the funniest stuff has been cut from the original hour long HBO special?!??!
So much has been cut out, for example:
The old man dating a young girl, the nasty dancing, the old man with one good leg. The audience is roaring with laughter, but they cut it out for this DVD? I know because I had copied the HBO special on VHS way back when, so compared it to this awful DVD edition.
The woman that comes on stage for a hug and he feels her hair to see if it is real. Everyone is crying with laughter. The minor incident with the druggie white-shirted dude in the balcony, then Sinbad mimicing the guys behind him, “he BETTER sit down, is what he BETTER do…” Then people waiting for someone to step on their foot. Again, lots of laughs.
Introductions of his parents are missing as well. They left the beginning choir sequence in, but cut out way too much funny stuff.
And the funniest is the little girl that wants an autograph, then Sinbad setting her up with the 12 year old boy, who jumps up out of his seat. Great stuff, not on the DVD.
My broadcast version from HBO is 60 minutes. And the back of the this DVD case says 60 minutes, but the version on the DVD is 44 minutes. So 16 minutes of the funniest bits have been edited. This makes no sense. A 1 hour show fits on a DVD easily. There was no special copyright music, or dirty material in the stuff taken out, why was it done?
Find a friend who copied the whole hour comedy special off of HBO, pop in the VHS, and laugh. This DVD with 16 minutes edited out, will just make you sad.
This was a great comedy special when it aired on HBO, but this is the worst DVD version ever. Avoid like the plague.
I, like other reviewers here, remember this masterpiece from the past on cable tv. Who can imagine the reasons for the makers of it to chop the original, complete broadcast all up. It is a very BIG disappointment for that reason alone, the performance is about as good as anyone could ever do, and perhaps the very best got cut.
For someone who does not remember what it was, it still very odd how it fades out and back in without continuity. Probably just created a black market, underground distribution for the original with this release.
Sinbad was his crazy self, as usual. Gave myself a headache from laughing so hard.
I purchased Sinbads’ latest stand-up because I caught the tail end of it on Cable. Not disappointed at all. He is back and better than ever.
I did not know what to expect since Sinbad has not been on the scene for a little while. What you will find is a much more mature, older Sinbad giving creedence to the “baby boomers” and our joys and ills. I laughed until I cried when he joked about the signs of a stroke. It was hilarious, yet, relevant and so true. So, if you are a baby boomer you will appreciate his brand of comedy. Clean and very funny!
Imagine a comedy show without the cursing, naming calling and explicit sexual content. There you have it. Sinbad is so funny and creative, I wish he hadn’t stayed gone so long.
Initially I wasn’t a huge fan of Sinbad. My husband saw this on Comedy Central and told me I just had to watch it. I’m glad I listened to him…THIS VIDEO IS HILARIOUS! Sinbad’s comedy is clean, fresh, and SO TRUE! We have shown this video to both families, friends, and co-workers and all have the same response…laughing until tears stream!! Totally worth the purchase!
I am somewhat of a fan of animation movies, and I just wanted to rate this movie as one of the top 10 that I have seen recently. Yes, the storyline is somewhat clichéd and the characters are clichéd, as well, but the animation and the thrill of the adventure more than make up for it. From one adversity to another, how will Sinbad overcome unsurmountable odds? oh but he does- watching this unfurl on the screen is what is so great about this movie!
Fairly amusing and entertaining movie, with the only disappointment being the changing of the title character from Arab to Greek. DVD features were good.
Sinbad – Legend of the Seven Seas is a little less rushed than usual for a DreamWorks 2D animation, but it still never quite works. The plot feels a bit too TV and the mixture of traditional hand-drawn animation with computer graphics isn’t exactly successful, with the CGI coming off as the loser – generally fine for the creatures, though like Sinbad’s ship they often seem to lack any real weight that prevents them from properly integrating with the rest of the film. Okay if you’re in an undemanding mood, but Ray Harryhausen has nothing to worry about.
Even though the tape only cost $1.00. Reading up on the description from the buyer who claim it was is new condition. I found this comment not to be true at all. The tape is truely only worth a $1.00. The movie is VERY BLARE. The only reason I have not send it back is because it is not worth the returned fee.
I have been a fan of ray harryhausen’s fantasy movies, and I was glad that these movies are now in blu-ray high definition.
The color, the fantasy characters and the action are superbly shown. I am looking forward for the rest of ray harryhausen’s
fantasy movies in blu-ray in the future!!!!
The best of the SINBAD films, and arguably one the best Ray Harryhausen monster fiestas! To me, only JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is of equal stature. We get not one, but two Cyclops’, a fire-breathing dragon, a two-headed roc, and a re-animated skeleton warrior! Not to mention a genie, an eeevil sorcerer, and a miniaturized maiden! Plus, there’s even a dancing snake-woman tossed in as well! Oh yeah, I almost forgot the giant crossbow! Packed w/ adventure, monster action, and magic, THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD is an automatic purchase for any stop-motion / creature maniac!…
If you’re like me, you remember watching this on Saturday TV in some terrible condition but that was ok because it was quite an adventure. And adventure it was with Harryhausen artistic magic that made this fun and way ahead of its time. When I popped in this Blu-ray I was expecting a sentimental journey, not the rush of the experience I got. I remember watching this and the colors were always faded and the copy grainy at best. I was stunned at the color and for a B-Movie, the High Def comes through more than I was expecting. In all, watching the Blu-ray of this film is a joy and the best I have ever seen it. Bravo!
Wonderful fantasy story with special effects as only Ray Harryhausen could do! The stop-motion creations are seamless and fluid. It’s hard to think of them as models — they seem so real. Any fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy films should see this one! It’s a masterpiece!
Im Incredibly happy with this Pack, Im a Ray Harryhausen Fan I love all the movies he made, so i wanted to get every movie with his work. This Pack help my so much with my collection, Because of 2 things:
1-It has Jason And The Argonauts that is practically his best film.
2-If you buy this pack you will have the Sinbad trilogy.
So, Some people that just want to see the best films of Ray in just one pack were a little disappointed because this pack Have “The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver” and it doesn’t have “Clash Of The Titans” and that’s something bad for some people that don’t want the entire collection, but for me it was good not having to buy “The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver” separately.
Now I’m going to say the extras and the quality of sound and video:
-Jason and the Argonauts: The quality of this DVD is very, very Good Both in Sound And Video. The extras are the Theatrical Trailer and an Interview of Ray talking about this movie.
-The 7th Voyage: The quality of the video in this one its a little grainy but it still good. The sound it’s not so good in this one and it’s almost impossible to hear it in Spanish but in English it still good. I really like that all the Sinbad trilogy has a lot of trailers of Ray’s movies.
-The Golden Voyage: The quality is very Good Both in Sound And Video, and it has all the trailers I Said before (Something i like about this DVD it’s that it has side A and B for Fullscreen and Widescreen).
-Sinbad and The Eye of the Tiger: its exactly like “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad”, except for the widescreen and fullscreen option.
-The 3 Worlds of Gulliver: The quality is very Good Both in Sound And Video. The Extras are the Theatrical Trailer, “This Is Dynamation”, “The Harryhausen Chronicles” and “The Making Of”.
*And Now My Own Top:
5-Sinbad And The Eye of the Tiger (But It Still a wonderfull Movie)
4-The 3 Worlds of Gulliver
3-The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
2-The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad
1-Jason And The Argonauts (Just Amazing)
Chris, you are missing the point. These movies were never cinematic masterpieces. But for their time, they were more fun than a barrel of monkeys on any Saturday afternoon at the local movie theater matinee’. Ray Harryhausen brought a unique talent to the art of monster movie making and any kid growing up in this era were facinated with all of his efforts. I loved them then and still get a kick after these so many years of watching them now. I can smell the stale popcorn!!
