This was the perfect choice to inspire one seven year old to create her own artistic displays. She made the decision to give it to her family on Valentine’s Day and she spent three weeks happily engrossed. While the balance of this afterschool class (aged 5yr to 10yr) were simply onlookers, they all appreciated the major pop-up display, and especially liked the small note card and envelope that affixes to any page of your choice. I wanted this one slightly shy student to have a “badge of honor.” Total success!

As far as flavor goes: Starbuzz, or Fumari shisha?
I've been looking into hookah for awhile now, and have been considering getting a hookah pipe, and shisha to smoke with my friends. Now, this would be the first time I'd have my own once, I get it-- and I'm the kind of person that likes to get the best the f i r s t time. I know that Make Your Own Hookah both Starbuzz, and Fumari are equal in prices now... I just want to know who produces the best flavors. And for better opinions I'll give you all an idea of flavors I'd like to try: Rose, Jasmin, [exotic] fruit flavors, and berries. If it helps, I really like sweet&tart flavors for fruits and berries. :] I'd love to hear your opinions, and hopefully this will help me choose an excellent quality brand. :D **Also! It's be great if you gave me your tips and tricks to add to the flavor, and cloud. I've heard that milk makes it thicker, would it do the same with Soy Milk? <- You know cool hookah stuffs like that. ***Serious opinions, and tips, please? Thank you!

I bought this kit for my nephew’s birthday last spring. He loved doing the books so much that he wanted more for Christmas! (I think he’s working on his own library for his little brother..) The pop-ups encourage creativity with illustrating and make the pictures really stand out. A little planning goes a long way to make sure all the pages have pictures and writing..

A holiday gift for 7 1/2 year old twin boys, it has not yet caught their fancy(some 2 months later). For boys at this age it definitely requires that an adult or older child be involved. Perhaps they will pick it up at some later time and be more interested.

Two grandsons (9 and 6) LOVE this chance to be creative and let their imaginations “flow”; bought for Christmas gifts (it’s now beginning of January) and the 9-year old has his “book” 1/2-way completed and knows what he wants to do for completion. Especially good for use during school breaks (vacations, holidays).

My 6 year old received this as a birthday present. I put off letting her take it out because I thought it would require a lot of time from me (I have 1 year old twins who I need to keep out of the way). I was completely wrong. All of the pop-up features use stickers which she could put on by herself. She colored and wrote an entire story incorporating the pop-up features. It kept her quiet and busy for 2 full hours. I highly recommend this product and I am buying 2 more kits to take out on rainy days.

This book gave me courage and inspiration when I was beginning to teach myself how to sew. It helps to have a sewing machine, but it isn’t necessary. The extremely simple and charming illustrations and directions say it all. It’s not haute couture, but it could be the beginning of it for an imaginative teen or budding designer. It was a lot of fun for me, and it demystified the craft of sewing useable clothing for myself and family.

This is designed by hippies in the Haight for people who are scared of commercial patterns, so you’ll be ahead of the game if you know how to sew at all. I’ve used this full version from the library and have the abridged version at home and used it for years. The system is based on simple cuts, minimal or no darts, few seams. You use clothes that fit you as the basis for making simplified versions and, if they’re too small, draw larger versions. 80% of the design is in your fabric choices, after all. The same simple dress in printed velvet, chiffon, or plaid cotton is three very different garments. Patterns include a-line and dirndl skirts (leading to all kinds of peasant skirts); the sweeping sorcerer’s dress, a true caftan, an empire dress, a turtleneck or hood for neck variations, and top versions of them all; fitted or elastic-waisted trousers; and some outer wear like ponchos and vests. The full version goes into more detail and variations, and includes projects in crocheting and knitting, like scarves, hats, and baby balls, and sewing projects like bags. If you’re looking for simple, fun, comfortable, utilitarian clothes, this is a one-stop investment in place of buying twenty simple patterns.

If you’re just starting out this book is great! It is very simple (which is awesome for me because I don’t know jack about sewing) It gives you a great place to start. The only thing I didn’t like about it, its very “hippy” there is a few things I would never use. But for the price they give you a huge amount of information and I will recommend this book to my friends.

  8. Beauchamp says:

I have a copy of this book from the 70’s. I happened upon it last night and showed it to my 20 year old son. What happened to the cover with the hippies on it? It is a really fun book that I think todays young hippies and homesteaders could learn from. I recomend it along with Alicia BAy Laurels clasic LIving on the Earth. Christa

We have used the Make Your Own Gum kit, and found this chocolate kit to be even better. Everything needed to make the chocolate is in the box. All you have to add is a spoon and a microwavable bowl. The action is quick and pretty foolproof. The only time lag comes after you’ve heated the chocolate and must wait for it to cool to the proper temperature before tempering. This takes about 15 minutes.

You get cocoa butter, cocoa, powdered sugar, starter crystals, a thermometer that works well for this application, adequate candy holders, and an informative instruction sheet. The instructions are very clear, and the resulting chocolate is good. If I have one complaint it’s that the science discussion is neither detailed nor in-depth and if that’s your focus you may want to supplement the material; however, if your focus is high interest hands-on science, this kit is terrific. There are even a couple of cacao beans to examine and taste.

  10. Jordan says:

This is such a great kit! The directions are really easy to follow, and everything is included. My kids loved reading about how chocolate is made and thought that the cacao beans that they sent were cool (you can take the skin off and taste them…they definitely need sugar…). The chocolate candy tastes great too!

My sister gave my 3 1/2-year-old this for Christmas and my daughter loves it! She’s at that crafty age where she’ll turn tape and a magazine into an art project. This kit comes with everything (including a glue stick) to make a lot of really fun cards. It’s perfect for those rainy days, or just when she’s a little bored. We’ve made these together, I’ve even set her lose with this by herself, and she always comes up with really imaginative designs.

  12. Houser says:

I bought this for my granddaughter Christmas of 08. We are still making cards every now and then. I like the durable box it comes in because it keeps the supplies nice and in one place. The empty spaces left by the shapes you use are also good templates to make more shapes.

  13. Kernell says:

I absolutely love this card making kit! We have purchased this exact same one twice. My girls just love it! It has a variety of shapes and patterns to use, great colors, and kids can easily punch out the shapes on their own. It’s perfect for kids to make their own cards for the special people in their lives! We will definitely be purchasing it again when this one runs out of supplies!

  14. Lowther says:

There are many positives about this kit: Carrying case is great to put the contents back into place and has a carrying handle. Everything fits easily and velcros shut. The paper colors are vibrant. The shapes are nicely perforated and do not rip as you are taking them out. The paper is a nice weight–almost as thick as cardstock, I believe. The cards are large: 5.5″ x 8.5″ – a nice size for small hands.

However, I have pretty paper and envelopes. What I really wanted were a good variety of shapes for my 6-year-old daughter who enjoys making cards. Instead, the set included the following popouts shapes:

7 sheets of paper in these colors: orange, blue, light green, purple, white, yellow, and pink. Each paper contained the following shapes of varying sizes:
8 squares (3 perforated into 6 triangles each)
    14 rectangles
8 circles (3 perforated into 2 semicircles each)
    5 flowers
    3 hearts
    18 petals/teardrops
1 sheet of black paper with 48 black circles (4 different sizes).

There is one piece of cardboard with 7 examples (their website [...] has other ideas), but once we created flowers, a house, a present, a face, and butterflies, there wasn’t much else to do (winter/Christmas just past). You really need to be creative with ideas to enjoy this kit to its fullest. I had hoped for more variety of shapes (birds, people, sports, furniture, etc).

For those who are imaginative, this set will likely be great. If you’re looking for pre-made shapes, be aware of this kit’s contents.

Purchased five of the “IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit” projects for Christmas. Two kits for my own children and three for my nephews. My children were very excited to get started on theirs and we already have the finished product (the actual book) back from the Creations by You company. They LOVE their storybooks that they personally created and I will cherish these forever! Thank you “Creations by You” for coming up with such a wonderful idea!

  16. Hensley says:

I bought this product for my six year old daughter for her birthday. We enjoyed every minute creating it. Not only was it fun for her to write and illustrate, she also learned a lot about the creative writing process, especially how to organize her thoughts. The final book turned out very professionally and the turn around time was quicker than we expected. I’m showing off her first publication to all our friends and family.

  17. Benzango says:

This has been my daughter’s favorite gift of all time. She drew all the pictures, then dictated the story to me. Her face, when we received a hard-bound real book in the mail was priceless! I’d like to do one of these every year. You can’t pick a better gift than this one.
