ELVIS is the DVD version of the much lauded television miniseries (it won both Golden Globe and Emmy awards for actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Camryn Manheim and Randy Quaid): the transfer of the extended three hour long series to a single DVD format is successful and demonstrates once again that made of television movies can often be superior to the Hollywood format.

The film is not without its flaws: the script by Patrick Sheane Duncan is painfully pedestrian at times and the use of lip-syncing using a variety of Presley recordings isn’t always convincing. But director James Steven Sadwith manages to overcome the obstacles and gives us a rather personalized view of the life of the King.

The film covers Elvis Presley’s life from his near poverty beginnings in Tupelo to his worldwide fame and fortune at his ‘comeback’ in 1968. The development of the committed guitar-playing singer from his first record through the development of his ’style’ and the ultimate glory and insecurity that paired his magic time is well told. If the story seems to be repetitive and goes on too long, then it also is giving the audience time to see the man behind the shadow of fame. Oddly enough Jonathan Rhys Meyers (now so superb in another biographical series as Henry VIII in ‘The Tudors’) was imported for the leading role, and while some may question the use of outsourcing here,

Rhys Meyers is so convincing in every way that the reasons for casting him are clear. In all this is a quality piece of work about one of America’s icons whose presence is still palpable thirty years after Presley’s untimely death at age 42. The awards given to this film are well earned and the DVD offers a fine (if long) evening of entertainment and nostalgia.

This is a wonderful series. We enjoyed watching it and everyone of my friends have borrowed it and enjoyed it. If you like Elvis I am sure you will enjoy this mini-series! :)

You couldn’t ask for a better look-alike, sound-alike like this guy Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He does an excellent job portraying Elvis in his high and low days along side great supporting actors! Elvis’ life is shown on a whole new angle – the side of Elvis that fans in his day didn’t see and now can only imagine what drove him to his demise and as well what made him great.
You wouldn’t be wasting your money if you are an Elvis fan to buy this series!

Granted I am not as big as an Elvis aficionado as some and I understand that this was licensed by the estate. I do however take issue with the whole “religious phase” since Elvis the Gospel years shows it was more than just a phase in his life, but rather a cornerstone foundation of who is was.

Not being a fan of Jonathan Rhys Myers at all, I will give him great credit for being Elvis. However the aspects of his life they focused bored me, too many scenes involving his pill dependence and waiting to have sex with Pricilla.

Probably the best show/movie/mini-series I’ve seen on Elvis. I love Jonathan Rhys Myers portrayal of Elvis, very real.

  5. Long says:

I like it, it works only cons so far if you need to use the delete key or function keys
on boot, I have not gotten those to work had to plug in additional keyboard for that.

  6. Huber says:

Worked very sporadically (I mean very). Every third or fourth character, mouse would not move, terrible. Contacted Logitech and their support was for me to pay to send it to them for replacement. I’m sending this back for a refund. Don’t waste your time or money. BTW, I’m a computer guy for 20 years so I have a clue how keyboards should work. After my experience with their support, I won’t be selling Logitech to my clients.

I really enjoy interacting with my HTPC using the Logitech diNovo Mini. It’s much better than my previous setup of a wired keyboard and mouse. The remote looks neat on the coffee table and does not intrude into the design aspect of the room (which my wife likes). You don’t even notice that it is a keyboard. Also, the bluetooth interface is great. No line of site is needed to the HTPC. The dual purpose track pad is a great idea. Also, I love the intelligent back lighting.

I had a small problem with mine not wanting to charge the battery. Logitech is in the process of replacing the unit. Their customer service was fast, accurate, and friendly. Great experience with them.
